Death of Justine Damond Ruszczyk – July 15, 2017
On July 15, 2017, Justine Maia Damond (née Ruszczyk) (April 4, 1977 – July 15, 2017), a 40-year-old Australian-American woman, was fatally shot by Minneapolis police officer Mohamed Mohamed Noor (born October 20, 1985), a Somali-American. Damond-Ruszczyk called 9-1-1 to report the possible assault of a woman in an alley behind her house. On March 20, 2018, Noor was arrested and charged. On April 2019, Noor was convicted of third-degree murder and manslaughter. He was later sentenced to 12.5 years in prison. A lawsuit brought by the family was settled for $20 million, one of the largest-ever settlements in a suit involving a police killing.
Blevins, Thurman Jr. June 23, 2018 Officer-Involved Shooting – MPD Police responded to a 911 call of a man outdoors firing a gun into the air. On arriving, they found Blevins, who was armed. Blevins began to run away. Blevins was shot in the back during a foot chase.
